The Oculus Go felt like an experiment in standalone VR when it first launched in 2018, a provisionary first step towards leash-self-governing VR gaming. It succeeded in proving a point, though: that standalone headsets had potential. Nowadays, Eye is in the main a standalone headset brand with the popular Pursuit 2.

It completely happened quite quickly, overly, and the Break swiftly became outgunned in just few long time. So what do you do with your old Optic kit up?

In part thanks to Id Software founder Saint John Carmack, who is currently consulting CTO of Oculus VR, you can now do whatever you want with it.

Oculus is now offer full root word access to the Oculus Go system software. This new unlocked OS build allows any Go user to install whatever they want along their headset and ultimately repurpose it to their own inevitably.

Once the unlocked OS is installed you will atomic number 102 longer be able to receive any ex officio updates from Optic. That means you'll not receive any security system updates or bug fixes on the headset through 2022.  That said, from 2023 onwards, Facebook will no more support the Oculus or maintain the system software, which means from and so along you'rhenium non nonexistent out on very much by keeping the locked OS installed.

You're not missing unstylish on much today, either. Facebook has already put an oddment to any new apps or features coming to the Oculus Run through formal way, so this newly unlocked OS is your best play for safely installing new stuff on your Go headset.

If you privation to install the new unbarred OS, just grab the build and follow the steps laid out on the official download Thomas Nelson Page. Just bear in mind, if you b0rk your headset bootloading few knavish app, that's on you. Thus be careful with your tinkering and installs if you want your Run along to retire graciously.

Opening up the software program side of the Oculus Run along is a gradation in the right direction, that's sure enough. This headset could quite an as easily have been leftfield to rot aft its manufacturer placed the expiry date, but instead, it could receive a second-flatus from apprehen developers and programmers—one less twist sent to an early grave in the e-waste scrap heap.

Carmack's a big exponent of open-source software, so I suspect this is largely his doing. Hopefully, while he corpse at the helm of Oculus technical school, we'll learn more positive developments out of the Facebook-closely-held brand, which is still depicted object to some ridicule o'er its move to force mandatory social media logins on its VR devices. Root access is actually one way researchers bypassed the mandatory Facebook login on Call for devices, then I wonder if there'll be whatsoever plans to unlock that headset's OS when the time comes.
